Problems With The Da Vinci Robot

Otherwise known as the da Vinci Robot, the da Vinci Surgical System was manufactured and developed by Intuitive Surgical Incorporated. They developed it to assist in minimally invasive abdominal procedures. Consisting of four mechanical arms, this machine gives surgeons a range of movement greater than that of the human hand. Furthermore, the computer guided arms do not require a large abdominal incision, resulting in shorter recovery periods. As such, these robots have been used in thousands of hysterectomies and prostatectomies around the country, and is increasingly being used to perform other procedures; including gastric bypasses, gall bladder removals and thyroid cancer surgeries.

Unfortunately, it has come to the attention of regulatory authorities that these machines may cause serious complications. According to The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), adding this expensive technology for routine surgical care does not improve patient outcomes. More importantly, reports indicate there is a steep learning curve with new surgical technologies, during which there is an increased complication rate. Patients receiving treatment from the device may be at an increased risk of being seriously injured. The following is a comprehensive list of the injuries that have been associated with these devices:

  • Surgical burns to respective arteries and organs
  • Peritonitis (painful and/or tender inflammation of the lining of the abdomen)
  • Sepsis
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Punctured blood vessels, organs and arteries
  • Burning or lacerations within the intestines
  • Severe bowel injuries
  • Punctured or lacerated uterus
  • Vaginal cuff dehiscence (reopening of the incision made to remove the uterus and cervix during a hysterectomy)
  • Additional revision surgery
  • Fistulas
  • Wrongful death
